Trauma-Informed Care For Doulas

Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) for doulas is an approach to serving clients that understands how previous traumatic events can impact a person’s experiences during the course of pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. When doulas understand the tenets of TIC and how to implement them, we can be influential in helping clients avoid or minimize potential trauma triggers and support their efforts to create a safe and empowered birth experience. In this class we will explore the following topics:

• Core principles of TIC and how doulas can implement them into practice • How to ask clients about and appropriately respond to trauma disclosures • Common ways in which birth and maternity care can trigger trauma • Creating individualized TIC safety plans with clients to avoid triggers • Recognizing when a client might be triggered and how to reestablish safety •
