Family Bonding Series (Part 3)

The First 7 Days: Infant Feeding
with Ashley Treadwell & Brave Birth Doulas

In this section of our Family Bonding Series, you’ll learn:

  • What to expect in the first seven days after birth

  • How to get breast/chest-feeding off to a good start

  • How to know if your baby is getting enough

  • When and how your milk will come in

  • Positioning for feeding

  • When to seek additional support

Curious about bottle feeding? Some families decide that breast/chest-feeding isn’t for them for one reason or another. We’d love to offer support around what it looks like to supplement with formula, dry up supply, etc. Please contact Ashley Treadwell at Cascadia Lactation for a feeding consult.

Ashley Treadwell is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and is skilled in assessing your baby for tethered oral tissue ("tongue and lip tie"), helping babies transition from bottle to breast/chest, pre-mature infants, low milk supply, painful breast/chest-feeding, and anxiety and insecurity surrounding breast/chest-feeding challenges.

The cost for this class is $25. It is open to Brave Birth families as well as the community. If you have hired a Brave Birth Doula for support you are entitled to two complimentary classes in this series. Payment is due with check/cash to the instructor the evening of the class.

This is a two day class (5/11 & 5/12) that will be held at 4003 NE Grand Ave.

MindfulNest is a childbirth education series led by Nicolette and Megan. The techniques learned in this class have the ability to reduce anxiety & stress, contribute to a healthy pregnancy, increase connection in your family, reduce pain during labor, enhance your immunity and improve child outcomes.

MATERIAL COVERED IN SESSION ONE:

  • Lay the groundwork for mindfulness practices

  • Increase your ability to cope with discomfort with practical tools that fit into everyday life

  • Functional movement in pregnancy & preparing the pelvis for birth

  • Navigate new household challenges and joys, while staying connected to yourself & your family

Early Labor: Your egg is about to crack! Anchor into the unknowns of early labor. As the arrival of your babe draws closer, what can you do as a household to gain confidence and prepare for the unfamiliar terrain of early labor?

  • Learn the stages of dilation/effacement and the variations of normal

  • Recognize the emotions & physical sensations common in this stage

  • How to create a birthing environment that’s supportive of your family’s needs

MATERIAL COVERED IN SESSION TWO:

Active Labor & Birth: It takes a village to hatch an egg! Find calm and confidence during active labor and the birth of your baby.  The energetic atmosphere of your chosen place of delivery can directly impact your birth experience.  How can you implement the tools you’ve practiced to set the tone for a supportive atmosphere?

  • Address fears & create individualized pathways for Relaxation- Comfort- Confidence

  • Learn about the role and importance of hormones in labor

  • Establish trust in your clinical care team

  • Transition & the birth of your baby

The 4th Trimester (Postpartum): Nest into the Fourth Trimester! • Understand & meet the needs of your family’s new normal

  • Access your internal tool kit to ride the waves of new parenthood

  • Recognize your baby’s transitions from womb to world & how to best support them

Full Moon Kids Clinic

A monthly clinic just for kids!

Needle free treatments that improve immunity, sleep and digestion.
1st child $20/ 2nd child $10/ Family max at $30 regardless of number of children

Shonishin is one of my favorite things to do when treating children.  They love it! My own kids beg me for it.  It not only makes them feel good but it works!  Shonishin translates as "little needle".  It was developed in Japan 2000 years ago, adapted from the Chinese Acupuncture theories.

In Japan, preventative care for children is utilized by having Shonishin Clinics for children once a month.  These clinics are held on the week of the full moon and are called Full Moon Kids Clinics.  We are excited to bring this model of preventative care to you!  Little Owl Medicine and Portland Pediatric Acupuncture are joining forces to bring you an amazingly helpful and wonderfully fun drop in clinic every month.  To maximize our ability to reach more families we are alternating clinic sites each month.  Portland Pediatric Acupuncture is on the west side of the river and is kicking off our inaugural clinic, October 21st, 2018.

These clinics are $20 for the 1st child/ $10 for the second child/$30 max per family regardless of number of children.

Hooray! You do not need to schedule a treatment time.  Drop in between 12:00-4:00 pm. We are choosing a drop in clinic model to allow families flexibility in timing.  This may mean that you will have to wait a few minutes, but our clinics are kid friendly and this also gives families a chance to meet each other growing their community of support.

During this clinic your child (or children) will receive a Shonishin treatment for overall health and wellness. Treatments generally take about 15 minutes.  Receiving twelve of these treatments a year can help to increase immunity (fewer sick days!), support digestive health, promote restful sleep and support emotional health.  When treatment is consistent, problems that may arise along the way are seen and treatment can be adjusted for those issues.  If a bigger issue has come up in between the treatments, a discussion can be had about scheduling treatments to address that particular problem.

We are excited to be able to offer this model of preventative care to our families and cannot wait to see you there. Please contact us with any questions and feel free to pass this information on to friends and family!

Family Bonding Series (Part 2)

Postpartum Planning
with Tasha Clothier & Kelly Overly

We spend so much time planning for the “big day” that we often overlook what comes next - the postpartum period! It is not just about a new baby! In this section of our Family Bonding Series, you’ll learn how to plan for your new little one as well as how to plan your own, much needed, self care. Your recovery from being pregnant and giving birth, no matter how you do it, is essential to the health and wellness of your family.

The cost for this class is $25. It is open to Brave Birth families as well as the community. If you have hired a Brave Birth Doula for support you are entitled to two complimentary classes in this series. Payment is due with check/cash to the instructor the evening of the class.
